The Coton de Tulear

The Coton de Tulear, pronounced “coTAWN day to-LEE”, is a very rare pure-breed that originated in Madagascar. They are actually the official dog of the country as well. They have been nicknamed “Royal Dog of Madagascar” because a law was passed stating no one but a noble could own one. Today, there is still a law prohibiting all but the very wealthy from owning the dogs. Someone at a Coton de Tulear rescue would be able to tell you more about the fascinating history of this breed and the danger of extinction they now face.

The Coton de Tulear is a small dog that stands around 11 inches high and weighs around 10 pounds. They have soft hair, not fur, that is very fluffy and like a cotton ball. Their hair grows to be around five inches long and they are classified as non-shedding. This means that they don’t shed, or that if they do it is in extremely small quantities. Because they have hair instead of fur, they are also good pets for people with allergies. They do need to be brushed everyday, but only bathed around once a month. Their color is usually a mix white and black or white and tri-colored. If you visit a Coton de Tulear rescue you will be able to see what these unique dogs look like.

They are a playful breed that is affectionate and intelligent. They are quick to learn and get along well with other dogs. They are friendly and gentle and can be completely non-aggressive. They have a bright and lively expression and are very happy dogs. Your Coton de Tulear rescue center will tell you that they can acquire Small Dog Syndrome that consist of a range behavior disorders that are human induced. They do like to play and do tricks as well as walking on their hind legs.

This breed of dog does well in apartments. They are okay without a yard and get enough activity indoors. A daily walk is recommended though. They do like to play and be around other people, so if you leave them alone too much they can develop separation anxiety. They adapt well to a variety of different living situations and can be happy in all of them as long as their owners take the time to meet their needs. Ask someone at your local Coton de Tulear rescue for ideas on how to help your Coton de Tulear fit in with your lifestyle.
